Top 3 Causes of Back Pain

Top 3 Causes of Back Pain We See at YourSpine Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui

Living in a fast-paced hub like Tsim Sha Tsui (TST), back pain is more than an inconvenience—it can halt your daily life. Whether you are commuting on the MTR or working long hours in a high-rise office on Cameron Road, your spine is under constant pressure.

At YourSpine Centre (亞太護脊中心), we see patients every day seeking back pain relief. While every case is unique, these are the three most common culprits we treat at our TST clinic.

1. “Office Syndrome” & Desk Fatigue

Hong Kong is a city of “knowledge workers” who spend 8 to 10 hours a day seated at desks. Prolonged sitting—often with a hunched back or “tech neck” from looking at smartphones—leads to spinal misalignment.

  • The Problem: Slouching over a laptop at a small desk weakens the muscles along your spine, making it painful just to sit upright.
  • The Chiro Solution: At our centre, we focus on posture correction and professional adjustments to realign your vertebrae and reduce the stress on your nervous system.

2. Slipped Discs & Sciatica

The high-pressure environment of TST often means people ignore minor aches until they become severe. A lumbar disc herniation (a “slipped disc”) is a leading cause of the sharp, radiating leg pain known as sciatica.

  • The Problem: When a spinal disc presses on a nerve, it can cause numbness, weakness, or burning sensations down your legs.
  • The Chiro Solution: Using specialized, non-invasive techniques, our chiropractors gently stretch the spine to relieve pressure on affected nerves without surgery.

3. Acute Strains from “Weekend Warrior” Injuries

Many TST residents are increasingly active in local gym culture or HIIT classes. However, performing heavy lifts or sudden movements with incorrect form often leads to acute muscle strains.

  • The Problem: Overworking or improper lifting techniques can strain the soft tissues and ligaments supporting your spine.
  • The Chiro Solution: We provide sports rehabilitation and joint mobilization to speed up recovery and, more importantly, teach you how to prevent the injury from happening again.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Your Sleepless Nights

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Your Sleepless Nights

If you’re suffering from a bout of sleeplessness, you’re not alone; the vast majority of adults will experience in-somnia at some point in their lives, although only about 10% of Americans struggle with chronic insomnia.
What you probably did NOT know, is that spinal misa-lignments (subluxations) seem to act as a form of chronic nervous system irritation, often initially painless, which chi-ropractors often find disturbs sleep for weeks or months.

What is insomnia?

Quite simply, insomnia involves a difficulty in falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. So if you regularly find yourself tossing and turning in the wee hours of the night, insomnia is likely to blame. A sleepless night here or there is normal, but if you find yourself going a week or more without a full night’s sleep, and if it’s affecting your health and concentration, it’s time to seek professional help.

What are the symptoms of insomnia?

Not getting enough sleep at night can cause more day-time problems than you might be aware of. Insomnia of any length of time, but particularly episodes lasting several days or weeks, can lead to:

  • Trouble remembering details, from mundane to important
  • An inability to concentrate on the task at hand
  • Decreased coordination
  • Irritability and moodiness
  • Increased likelihood of a car accident, often due to falling asleep at the wheel

What causes insomnia?

Certain factors can actually help trigger bouts of insom-nia, such as high levels of stress that can bring on short-term insomnia (which, if left untreated, can lead to chronic insomnia, so it’s best to act quickly before it becomes a lasting problem). While people of all ages can experience insomnia, instances tend to get worse with age. People with alcohol addictions and mental health problems com-monly suffer insomnia, as do members of low-income families.
Other common causes include:

  • A change in your sleep routine, usually brought on by an unusual working schedule
  • An unpleasant sleep environment, with un-comfortable temperatures, extreme noisiness, and/or excessive light
  • Serious illness, particularly those that require hospitalization
  • The use of certain medications, including those containing stimulants, some over-the-counter asthma medications, and certain prescription drugs used to treat high blood pressure, de-pression, anxiety, and schizophrenia

Determine When to Seek Treatment

The key to knowing when to seek treatment lies in the extent or duration of the insomnia.
If you occasionally find it hard to fall asleep or wake up often during the night but then wake up feeling rested and fully able to function in our daily activities, then you likely don’t have a major sleep problem.
If on the other hand, you find yourself spacing off at work, snapping at your loved ones, or showing any of the other symptoms mentioned above, you’re better off seeking professional help, and the sooner the better.

How Chiropractic Care Can Alleviate Your Sleep Problems Healing

While too many patients don’t tell us about sleep disorders before their sessions, many report improved sleep even after being treated for conditions unrelated to insomnia, so imagine the relief you can feel if you report your sleeplessness to us.
Chiropractic may help you improve sleep by:

  • Opening up the airways so you breathe better at night.
  • By decreases the pain and restlessness for those suf-fering an illness that keeps you up at night.
  • Improved body mechanics, which leads to improve overall functioning of the brain pathways that control sleep.

We can help identify the severity of your insomnia and determine the treatment plan that is just right for you. If you need a sleep study, need to see an ENT or an RT, we’ll help with that too!

Headache & Chiropractic

How to Relieve Excruciating Headache Pain Without Drugs or Harmful Side Effects

If you’ve bought into the commonly-held belief that chiropractic care is just for back pain sufferers, you’re not alone. But there is growing evidence of late that chiropractic care can also get to the root of the causes behind many recurring headache woes, including migraines and cluster headaches. But let’s start off with an overview of the types of headaches and their causes.

What are migraine and cluster headaches?

According to Medicine.net, migraine headaches are the second most common type of headache (after tension headaches), affecting roughly 28 million Americans, from children to adults. Migraine sufferers might see spots that blur their vision, have trouble concentrating, and report a cold sensation in their fingers.

Cluster headaches occur often, sometimes twice per day, for a period of several weeks or months at a time, followed by a few months or even years of pain relief. The pain associated with these headaches is excruciating and can last for 30-90 minutes at a time, often showing up around the same time each day and even jarring sufferers from a deep sleep.

While neither of these headache types are life-threatening, they can severely limit your ability to perform regular daily activities and can drastically affect your overall quality of life if left untreated.

What causes migraine and cluster headaches?

Migraine headaches come about when blood vessels in the head and neck contract and then dilate, a situation typically caused by hormonal fluctuations. The pain associated with migraines is caused by an over-dilation of the vessels, swelling in the brain, and muscle tension.

While the exact cause of tension headaches is currently unknown, they are believed to be brought on by abnormal activity in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls the body’s biological clock. Cluster headaches often run in families and can be activated by changes in sleep patterns or certain medications. Tobacco and alcohol can also trigger episodes for people who are susceptible to cluster headaches.

Finding relief from debilitating headaches

Chiropractic headache care can provide immediate relief, in most cases, without the side effects of the prescription and over-the-counter medications many chronic headache sufferers gulp down on a daily or weekly basis. Furthermore, because chiropractic care for headache relief does often get to the root of what’s causing the headaches, patients can expect long-lasting results, without having to rely on taking their medication on a regular basis.

Alleviate Headache Pain Before It Starts

In addition to regular chiropractors treatment, there are several other steps you can take to help ward off headache pain before it starts. You can try:

  • Regularly stretching at least once an hour, especially if you spend a lot of time in one position (such as sitting in front of a computer)
  • Performing low-impact exercise at least 3 days per week
  • Drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration, a leading cause of headaches
  • Eating a diet low on fat but full of high-complex carbs, which can lower the frequency and duration of migraines
  • Practice relaxation techniques to help ease stress
  • Maintaining a regular sleep schedule

What to Expect During Your Chiropractic Visit

Because all patients and their conditions are unique, we will perform a full evaluation and present you with a treatment plan that’s just right for you.
Often, the problem is that the bones in your neck are "misaligned", causing tension in the surrounding muscles and nerves. Sometimes these misalignments are so slight that they are easily missed by other medical practitioners who aren’t trained to recognize when the intricate placement of bones is slightly off base. Chiropractors, on the other hand, are trained to treat this condition by gently guiding the bones back into place and more normal movements.
We will also provide other recommendations for headache relief, such as teaching you stretching exercises you can do at home and showing you the best sleep positions to avoid straining your neck (and potentially spurring a headache).
We can usually help you identify and treat the root of your headaches…giving you instant, and often lasting relief. Please call us at to schedule an evaluation, today!
You don’t have to learn to live with chronic neck pain anymore, not on our watch. Schedule an appointment with us today and we’ll help you get started on the road to a pain-free lifestyle.
